Firstly, why buy a property in Spain?

The number one reason to buy a property in Spain according to Kyero customers is the sunshine, 3,000 hours of it to be exact. But beyond the sun, sand, and sangria, there are at least 101 reasons to move to Spain.

Spain was voted the second best country in the world to live in by expats in 2023, according to Internations’ annual survey. The cost of living in Spain is cheaper than almost all northern European countries according to Numbeo’s cost of living index 2023.  And you could bag a bargain three bedroom villa with pool and garden for under €100k.

The Spanish property market remains robust as we move into 2024, despite the global uncertainties of the previous year, and continues to attract investors from around the globe. House prices remain steady, fuelled by a scarcity in supply—a consequence of unprecedented buying activity in the aftermath of the pandemic.

More good news could also be on the horizon; as the Spanish and French governments have recently been lobbying for the EU to relax the 90/180 Brexit rule. If it happens, it would mean British buyers would be allowed to stay in Spain for a lot longer without the need for a visa, welcome news for anyone seeking a Spanish holiday home. 

Torrevieja, Alicante

Torrevieja is known for its picturesque salt lakes, which contribute to the area’s healthy microclimate. The high concentration of salt & iodine in the air helps people who suffer from asthma. Bathing in the lake mud is also good for your joints, skin and general wellbeing.

Torrevieja has been popular with expats for decades and was the number one most popular location for property buyers in Spain in 2023, according to our data gurus. With five blue flag beaches, a pretty seafront promenade, and numerous restaurants and bars, it’s easy to see why Torrevieja continues to attract foreign buyers.

A little further to the north, Guardamar del Segura boasts pristine blue-flag beaches, lush parks, an attractive marina, and a charming town centre. While nearby La Marina is a dream come true for golfers, with seven courses to choose from.  

Why buy a property in Torrevieja? It’s super popular with tourists and expats, so it’s a good bet if you’re looking to make money out of your property, there’s also lots to do in and around the town, with award winning golf courses, museums, waterparks, and spectacular beaches to visit.   

Málaga, Andalucia

Vibrant Málaga offers the Mediterranean lifestyle in a bustling and lively Spanish city. Its authentic Spanish vibe and cultural cache has blossomed in recent years due to significant investment in the city centre, which has been transformed into a hip place to live and visit, with excellent museums and a thriving food scene, rivalling its nearby neighbours of Seville and Granada for authentic Spanish culture.

There are great transport links - the city centre is just 10 minutes from Málaga international airport which is served by many low-cost airlines. There are also excellent high-speed rail connections to the rest of Spain and mainland Europe.

El Limonar in the east of the city, is one of the most popular residential areas, and it’s next to one of the best beaches in Málaga. Pinares de San Anton is an affluent, up and coming suburb, where you’ll find a glut of high end villas with pools and new urbanisations being built.

Why buy a property in Málaga? The city was rated the best city in the world to live by Internations’ annual expat city ranking. Málaga is now the third-biggest urban hotspot in Spain for property investors after Madrid and Barcelona. 

Sotogrande, Cádiz

Sotogrande is a highly sought after private residential development on the Costa del Sol, offering some of Europe’s most expensive properties. The busy marina is home to a sailing club, shops and restaurants.

There are two tennis clubs, five golf courses, including the Valderrama Golf Club, which played host to the 1997 Ryder Cup and the European Tour Volvo Masters, plus six polo fields, paddle courts, a riding stables, yoga, kayaking, windsurfing, jet skiing lessons, hoverboards, electric bikes, paddleboards, longboards, and segways and scooters are available for rent and sale.

Nearby excursions include the Alcornocales Natural Park, the rock of Gibraltar and Marbella is only a 30 minute drive. When it comes to overseas buyers, Sotogrande is the second most searched-for destination in the Cadiz province of Spain, and it is particularly popular with the British, as well as buyers from western and northern Europe and the USA.

Sotogrande is a destination that appeals to property investors looking for a little more space and peace than they’ll find in nearby glitzier resorts like Marbella, and Puerto Banus which is only a 45-minute drive away.

Why buy a property in Sotogrande? Sotogrande offers sophisticated apartments and colourful townhouses mixed with enormous luxury villas, offering modern, boundary-pushing architecture, high specification facilities and a sense of privacy. 

A Coruña, Galicia

Situated on the northern tip of Spain, facing the Atlantic, the charming city of A Coruña is made up of a bustling commercial port and enchanting Old Town, and was once home to a young Pablo Picasso. City highlights include the Paseo Marítimo recreational space, an aquarium, several museums, and a casino, seafront promenade and the iconic UNESCO Tower of Hercules Roman lighthouse.

A Coruña is known for its laid-back lifestyle and legendary food scene. The region of Galicia is renowned for its delectable seafood, hearty meat stews, Galician crêpes (filloas), and Albariño wine, making it an ideal destination for food enthusiasts looking to invest in property. The wet yet temperate climate of Galicia ensures an abundance of plants and food produce, which can be admired (and devoured) at the bustling Mercado San Agustin covered market, as well as at numerous restaurants, tapas and pintxos bars dotted around the city.

Why buy a property in A Coruña? Low cost of living compared to other big cities and coastal towns on the more well known costas, and Spain’s excellent high-speed rail network now reaches Galicia, cutting the journey from Madrid to A Coruña from five hours to just two. 

Santa Ponsa, Mallorca

The seaside resort of Santa Ponsa is the second most popular location for property investment in sun-kissed Mallorca, after Palma. Located along the southwest coast, just 25 mins from the capital, Santa Ponsa is a lively town known for its sensational sunsets, big crescent-shaped beach, water activities, restaurants, and boutique shops.

There are two international schools within a 15 minute drive of the resort, covering primary age to sixth form. Golf enthusiasts will love being able to walk to the renowned Santa Ponsa Golf Club, and the marina adds a touch of luxury, providing a picturesque backdrop for waterfront dining.

Los Alcazares, Murcia

A coastal spa town situated on the western shore of the Mar Menor (a large saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow strip of land called La Manga), both residents and visitors are attracted to the town for its beaches, thermal spas, water sports and numerous festivals. The mineral-rich water of the lagoon is revered for its healing properties and is listed by the World Health Organisation as one of the healthiest places on earth.

The region of Murcia is popular with property buyers. 28.79% of all sales in Murcia are completed by international buyers, according to the Spanish government’s Q1 2023 property sales figures. Currently, the average asking price for property for sale in Murcia sits at 259,000€, a 6% increase year on year.

Foreign residents make up 13.7% of the total population in Murcia. Many of these foreign residents are located in the area for work, with Murcia accounting for 20% of Spain’s agricultural exports for fruit and vegetable (yet occupying just 2.2% of the territory). Tourism is Murcia’s main other industry.

Why buy a property in Los Alcazares? It could make a positive difference to your health, the salt air from the lagoon is reportedly good for asthma, while the salt waters can help ease the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism.

Santa Eulalia, Ibiza
